Year-Round

Ranch Manager

Housing available

The Ranch Manager oversees the daily operations of the feedlot, ensuring optimal animal health, welfare, and productivity. They manage feeding programs, supervise staff, and maintain equipment.

Responsibilities

Animal health and welfare: daily checks of cattle, monitoring feed bunks, identifying illness, and coordinating treatments or vaccinations with the Ranch Foreman and veterinarian. Overseeing herd health, diagnosing and treating sick animals, and ensuring proper processing.
Feed management: overseeing the efficient mixing and delivery of rations. Daily reporting of cattle movement, feed inventory, and medication inventory.
Personnel management: recruiting, training, and scheduling team members with the Ranch Foreman so the facility runs smoothly. Productive personnel management and staff assessment.
Facility and equipment maintenance: keeping equipment (tractors, loaders) and infrastructure (corrals, fences) safe, clean, and in good repair. Overseeing and documenting the operation, inspection, and maintenance of feedlot equipment.
Administration and marketing: tracking animal growth and market prices to maximize profitability. Preparing short- and long-term operational plans with the Ranch Owner.
Ensuring all health and safety standards are met and the working environment is clean, tidy, and hygienic.
Ensuring security of all assets, including land, livestock, and inventories.

Qualifications

Experience: strong background in beef cattle husbandry, herd health, and operating modern farm equipment. Proven leadership.
License: a valid driver's license and a clean abstract.
Technical skills: basic computer proficiency for record-keeping and data management.

Ranch Foreman

Housing available

The Ranch Foreman oversees daily operations, supervises Ranch Hands, Pasture Riders, and the Feed Truck Operator, and manages cattle health and nutrition. They ensure strict adherence to biosecurity and safety protocols and fill in for the manager when absent.

Responsibilities

Crew supervision: coordinating and monitoring the daily activities of staff.
Feed and nutrition: overseeing efficient mixing and delivery of rations. Monitoring feed bunks, adjusting rations, and assisting in feed mill operations.
Facility and equipment maintenance: ensuring the upkeep of pens, barns, and heavy machinery. Keeping equipment (tractors, loaders) and infrastructure (corrals, fences) safe, clean, and in good repair. Overseeing and documenting operation, inspection, and maintenance of feedlot equipment.

Qualifications

Experience: strong background in beef cattle husbandry, herd health, and operating modern farm equipment.
Leadership: proven ability to manage, train, and schedule farm workers.
License: a valid driver's license and a clean abstract.
Technical skills: basic computer proficiency for record-keeping and data management.

Heavy Equipment

Feed Truck / Heavy Equipment Operator

The Feed Truck Operator is responsible for mixing and distributing rations to livestock. They operate heavy farm equipment such as payloaders, tractor-pulled mixer wagons, and automated feed trucks to precisely deliver total mixed ration to feed bunks according to nutritionist guidelines.

Responsibilities

Mixing feed: loading exact weights of commodities, grains, silages, and hay into the mixer wagon using automated scales and augers. Operating the loader and feed wagon.
Distribution: driving assigned routes within the feedlot or pasture to unload feed evenly into bunk lines at the right times.
Maintenance: performing daily pre-trip inspections, keeping equipment clean, and greasing and maintaining augers and mixer knives.
Monitoring: tracking cattle consumption behaviour, observing feed spoilage, and reporting health irregularities to the manager.

Qualifications

Licensing: a Class 5 driver's licence.
Physical demands: frequent climbing in and out of cabs and operating in all weather conditions.
Technical skills: comfortable with computerized feeding systems, scales, and inventory management software.

Pasture Crew

Ranch Hand / Pasture Rider

The Ranch Hand / Pasture Rider proactively monitors cattle health and pen conditions and reports to the Ranch Foreman. The primary goal is to patrol pens daily to identify sick, injured, or distressed animals and sort them for treatment while maintaining low-stress animal handling.

Responsibilities

Daily health checks: visually inspecting every animal in the designated area to ensure they are eating, breathing correctly, and acting normally.
Disease management: identifying respiratory disease or other ailments early and safely pulling the animal into a hospital pen for treatment.
Low-stress handling: moving and sorting cattle calmly using point-of-balance techniques.
Record keeping: logging health data, treatment regimens, and inventory counts.
General maintenance: repairing fences, cleaning water bowls and troughs, bedding cattle, cleaning pens, and pen and yard maintenance. Following protocol and company procedures.
Communicating and reporting any irregularities to the Ranch Foreman, and handling specialized jobs as assigned by the Ranch Manager or Ranch Foreman.

Qualifications

Feeding and cattle-handling knowledge is an asset.
The work environment demands working in all weather conditions with early morning starts.

Indian Head is ten minutes down the road.

The ranch sits 10 minutes from Indian Head and about 45 minutes from Regina. It is a full small town, not a wide spot on the highway, and here is some of what is waiting there at the end of a shift.

Rink, curling, and ball

A.J.M. Davies Arena runs one of the largest ice surfaces in Saskatchewan at 190 by 85 feet. There is a curling club, ball diamonds, and two gyms for basketball, volleyball, and classes.

Pool, parks, and golf

Dixon Park has an outdoor pool with a waterslide, a spray park, and a skate park. The golf club plays nine holes on grass greens with a driving range, and there is a nine-hole disc golf course in town.

Schools and childcare

Kindergarten through grade 12 right in town, a Southeast College campus for postsecondary and trades, plus licensed daycare and preschool programs.

Health and services

Indian Head Union Hospital covers emergency, inpatient, and outpatient care with lab and x-ray on site. Two medical clinics, dental, 24-hour ambulance, fire, and an RCMP detachment.
